Science of Reading

The science of reading is a multidisciplinary field that focuses on the cognitive, linguistic, and neurological processes involved in reading, as well as the effective teaching methods and interventions that support the development of reading skills.
Since 2021, independent colleges and universities across North Carolina have worked to develop, adopt, and implement coursework that aligns with the requirements of Session Law 2021-8 for teaching based on the Science of Reading (SoR; https://www.ncleg.gov/BillLookup/2021/S387). NCICU formed a Task Force comprised of higher education professors from across independent and private institutions in North Carolina. This Task Force was initially charged with creating a set of competencies to serve as guidance for educator preparation programs to align literacy courses with Science of Reading. Following the creation of the set of competencies, a self-study was created and sent to all institutions. The intention of this self-study was to guide program improvement in evidence based literacy instruction.
In November 2021, NCICU applied for and received a grant from the Goodnight Educational Foundation (GEF) to support each of NCICU’s 31 EPPs to enhance, redesign, and develop effective literacy coursework, practica, and internships based in the Science of Reading, as that term is defined in G.S. 115C-83.3(7a). This grant funded EPP support project began in January 2022.
This site is a toolkit that shares links that the Task Force recommends for others going through a similar process. For more information on NCICU’s Science of Reading grant and faculty support project, please contact Ms. Denise Adams at [email protected].
