Johnson C. Smith University (JCSU) is a private, historically Black university located in the heart of Charlotte, North Carolina. Founded in 1867 as Biddle Memorial Institute, JCSU has been a cornerstone of higher education, leadership, and social advancement for nearly 160 years. The University prepares a diverse population of students to become critical thinkers, skilled professionals, and compassionate global citizens who light the way through character, leadership, and service.
Situated on a beautiful 100-acre campus overlooking Uptown Charlotte, JCSU blends history and innovation as the number one private HBCU in North Carolina. The University, led by President Valerie Kinloch, Ph.D. ’96, offers 20 undergraduate degree programs spread across three colleges: the College of Business and Professional Studies, the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), and the College of Arts and Letters. JCSU boasts a 12:1 faculty to student ratio with a host of dedicated faculty mentors, 90% of which hold terminal degrees. and a focus on experiential learning that connects classroom instruction to real-world opportunities. JCSU’s Sport Management Program is ranked #1 among HBCUs and #20 in the nation. Its Esports Program offers the first Esports Trifecta among HBCUs.
As an anchor institution in Charlotte’s Historic West End, JCSU plays a vital role in community revitalization and economic development. Through partnerships with the City of Charlotte, local corporations, and philanthropic organizations such as the Mayor’s Racial Equity Initiative (MREI), JCSU leads efforts to promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and social mobility. MREI funds have supported a team of highly impactful success coaches and 400 Now: scholarships and facility upgrades to support football, track, choir and band. MREI funds also have supported the creation of new STEM labs, Golden Bulls TV (GBTV), the Honors Program, Becoming Kings, and the Finance and Technology Lab—initiatives that empower students to lead in media, business, and technology.
JCSU’s vibrant student life includes NCAA Division II athletics and more than 40 student organizations, and signature programs. The University’s commitment to diversity and inclusion extends globally through partnerships with institutions in Ghana, Nigeria, and beyond, preparing students for leadership in an interconnected world.
