Salem College
Salem Academy and College is the oldest continuously operating educational institution for girls and women, and the 13th oldest college, in the United States. Salem’s 57-acre campus is located in the heart of Old Salem, the historic district of Winston-Salem, NC. Founded in 1772, Salem has been educating young women with excellence for over 250 years. From its inception, Salem College has maintained its position as an academic institution of distinction and resilience, surviving wars and societal evolution, and seamlessly blending centuries of history with a future-focused education.
Today, Salem’s campus combines historic architecture with modern academic and recreational facilities. Offering 26 undergraduate majors and 32 minors, Salem is the nation’s only liberal arts college dedicated to advancing women in health leadership fields. This focus aligns with Salem’s vision statement to be “the premier women’s college committed to advancing equity in health and in our society.”
Salem College students benefit greatly from its small class sizes; with a student-to-faculty ratio of nine to one, each student is able to receive personalized attention from their professors. The College’s emphasis on leadership, ethics, and wellness ensures that every student leaves Salem fully equipped to thrive in graduate school or the workforce.
By combining a deep sense of history with a progressive educational model, Salem College continues to shape the next generation of confident, compassionate leaders. Its enduring commitment to women’s education and its focus on preparing graduates to lead in health and wellness fields make Salem truly distinctive. For students who are passionate about both academic and personal growth and who are dedicated to making a difference, Salem College offers an ideal environment in which to learn, lead, and reach their full potential.
